The True Account of U.F.O sighting over ENNISKILLEN, April 10 1998
My name is Pete Cresswell, and the story you are about to read actually happened. To explain how this affected me at the time, and the reason I did not wish to go public, you would need to know some of my personal history and what was happening in my life at that time.
I came to Enniskillen as a professional guitarist in 1966 from London. My wife and I were separated in June 1993 after 23 years of marriage, and I decided to go back on the road as a guitarist full-time. After the initial traumatic time of the break up, myself and my wife remained friendly and both were in the process of getting our lives back in order, when in 1996 Anna came down with cancer. After many operations she gradually got worse, so I put my music on hold to go and look after her as a carer.(She had knowbody else to help her, Janis being married with a daughter of her own and Judy, who was at college in Hounslow). I would nurse Anna all day returning to my own flat at night. By the beginning of 1998 Anna was bed bound. This was very tiring as Anna could not move at all or do anything for herself. This is basically what was happening in my life on a daily level at the time of the sighting. To keep my hand in as a guitarist I was playing every Sunday night in the Railway Hotel (for the craic’ as they say and a laugh.
I had been very interested in the Skys at that time as I had already seen Haleys Comet, and in the week beginning 6 April 1998 the T.V News was giving out details of how the Space station was very visible as the brightest object in the sky during that week and should be very visible with the naked eye. I had been looking every night that week, casually when out with the dog for a walk, or from my back garden without any success, when on the Friday night (Good Friday ironically) of April 10th at 23.45 approx’ I decided to let the dog have one more piss in the back garden before I went to bed and at the same time have one last look for the space station which I had been looking for two or three times earlier in the night. I had got quite adept at scanning the sky at night, so I went first to my side gate looking towards the Gaelic pitch area . I noticed a triangular pattern of stars in the distance and many other star formations, (this being a very rare cloud free night for Enniskillen) but I could not see any sign of the space station, so I went up to the top of my garden to look in a different direction. This also proved fruitless, so I decided to have just one more look back from the side gate before retiring to bed. On returning to the side gate I scanned the sky again, but this time I noticed that the front star of the triangular formation was moving towards me. My first thought was a helicopter as we get a lot of them around here, but on looking carefully I also noticed that the back two stars were also moving in perfect unison with the front one. I instantly realised that what I was looking at was a UFO and I was also aware that I was probably the only bloody person in Enniskillen that was seeing it, as to the naked eye it just looked like three stars (who would notice if a star was moving?) but I knew that I did not have to do anything as the craft was coming straight towards me. I did not have time to call anybody else or I would have missed it myself and I was not about to do that. To say I was gobsmacked was an understatement. The craft seemed to be extremely low (100-200ft) but I realise that this is unlikely and therefore my estimation of the size of the craft would be well out if it was, say 10,000ft. Nevertheless, as I was looking at it, it seemed to be about a half mile long. It made absolutely no noise, and as it got above the top of my head I could see for the first time the mass of the body between the three “stars”. If I had a strong torch I could have lit it up, or that is how low it looked. The speed was extremely slow, not much more than bicycle speed and as the craft was three-quarters of the way over me it turned slightly right heading out towards the St Angelo army camp/airport direction. To say I never slept that night is an understatement, as I did not sleep properly for weeks, questioning my own sanity and eyes. I knew if I told anybody I would get the “Give me a pint of what he’s on “. I decided that I would have to tell somebody but who was the problem . I contemplated telling the RUC but figured they would break their balls laughing once I had left the room, and in no way did I want the press involved as Anna was far to sick and I did not want to be invaded by reporters. Also I figured it would do my street credibility as a guitarist a lot of harm, as I would rather be remembered as a good guitarist, than a guitarist that says he saw a UFO. The only consolation for me was the fact that I knew apart from Enniskillen, I could not be the only person that had seen it and surely radar must have been aware of it, ( if not we are in trouble if they are not friendly ). I decided to do nothing that night but to wait till morning when my parents were due back from their holiday abroad and then ask my dads advice as he had been in the R.A.F. In the morning I had already decided that the only thing I could do was report it to the “Ministry of Defence” as at least that way I would not be bothered by reporters etc’, and it would be discreet. I wrote out what I had seen on a postcard. This was deliberate as I had hoped that if any postman reading it had seen it themselves, or knew of somebody that had, they may have got in touch with me. I did not know the address of the M.O.D so I addressed it to Ministry of defence, London . I figured that the post office must have an idea where they were. After I had written the postcard I then went to the phonebox with the postcard to post, and rang my parents in England. They were due back in the house about 10.30am from the airport. I told them what I had seen, getting my mother to take the extension so they could both here the story at the same time. They must have wondered what I was going to tell them and probably thought I had been seeing things. What else could they think? My Dad said that if I was certain of what I had seen and did not want to go public the MOD was the only way of officially recording the story. I then phoned my daughter Janis and told her what I had seen, causing much amusement, ( they called round later to get the story in full) as I knew I would need some witnesses to the story who would keep it quite. After I had finished my phonecalls I crossed the road to the post office on the Killmacormick Rd and posted the card. After telling them, I made my way up to Anna’s house and told her what I had seen and done. She thought it was hilarious but at least it gave her something to smile about, and took her mind of her own problems. Later that day I phoned my other daughter in Hounslow at her college and told her. The only other people I told that day was a close friend Keith Houston and my brother in London. Later that week I also told the friends I was playing with in confidence as extra witnesses. After that nothing happened for a couple of weeks, till my father rang me on the 27th April (Anna’s Birthday and our wedding anniversary) to say that his paper “The Daily Mail” had a large piece in the paper that day of the craft I had seen, and a story of it being chased by dutch jets before flying off at a speed of 24,000 mph. He said that he would send over the cutting the following day. The following day when I purchased my paper “The Daily Mirror” on my way up Anna’s, the Mirror also had large piece written by Tom Dunn on the same subject. I was delighted as at least my own kids and the others I had told knew I had already reported this 16 days earlier, and to me it confirmed that I had not gone mad for 5 minutes, not that I needed any confirmation. I decided to see if I could find out any more on the articles by ringing the Mirror. I phoned their N.Ireland number and asked to speak to Tom Dunn but he was not there. The receptionist asked what it was about and I told her I was making a query about the ‘UFO’ article he had in the paper that day. She asked if he could call me back, and as I did not want to be paying for the call I gave her my number. (Big mistake) A little while later he rang me up in Anna,s house (where I was) and I asked him where he had got the information from regarding the article he had written in the paper that day. He told me that this was privileged information but asked me why I wanted to know. I told him that I had seen it myself and had reported it to the MOD on the 11 April two weeks before he knew about it. He instantly asked me if he could he come down to Enniskillen the next day with a photographer and do a story. I told him no way, that my wife was dying of cancer, and I did not wish to go public with it. And as I had already reported it to the MOD I figured I had done my bit. He tried to talk me round but I was not interested. An hour later the phone went again. I let the answer machine kick in as I figured it may be the Mirror again, and it was. He left a message saying could I give him a call as soon as possible. I ignored it as the conversation was ended as far as I was concerned. The next day on reading my Daily Mirror I was horrified to see an article on page 2 saying “ I spotted the UFO” says terrified musician Pete Cresswell”. I phoned to protest but they said they had rung me the day before and left a message on the answer machine, (the message) to warn me they were going to run the story anyway without my permission. Later that day a radio station also rang from the South on seeing this article but I gave them the brush off as well.
A couple of days later I received a letter from the MOD saying that as I was the only person from Enniskillen to report the UFO they could not corroborate my story, which is exactly what I figured they would say anyway.
Recently I have been in touch with the MOD again asking them about the reported radar reports in the Mail and Mirror. They say that although they were aware of the story’s in the Mail, Mirror and Telegraph among others the radar bases involved knew nothing about it, (which is exactly what I figured they would say again).
The only thing they cannot explain is the ‘coincidence’ that why I had notified them 16 days before I could have had the faintest idea that the story’s would be in the papers at all. Also what about the radar base out at the army camp in St Angelo as I assume they must have one? Also did anybody else report it to the M.O.D as I have since seen a video shot from the south of England at a later date on the internet, that is definitely the craft I saw and just as I saw it, shot by a night security guard.
I must admit though that it gave me a lot of satisfaction knowing I had covered myself by telling the M.O.D and a few selective friends and I was able to say “I told you so”. Antbody wishing to see a Fuller account of this with MOD letters ,Daily Mirror cuttings please just ask. Also since seeing this i have had anotherone go over my house
